This project involved transforming a Victorian property in Wandsworth Common with a large basement conversion and new kitchen extension.
The aim was to create a home that felt modern and spacious while making better use of both the interior and the garden. A strong connection between the house and outdoor space was central to the design, with carefully chosen materials carrying through from the living space to the garden.
The client wanted to open up the ground floor, create a larger kitchen and make the most of the garden.
The brief included a substantial basement conversion, a new kitchen extension and extensive landscaping. The outdoor space was designed to be just as usable as the interior, with dedicated areas for cooking, dining and relaxing.
We carried out the basement conversion and kitchen extension, creating a larger and more flexible living space.
Inside, polished concrete flooring was paired with a bespoke kitchen featuring a central island and separate pantry. Custom powder-coated aluminium glazing was used throughout the extension, helping to bring plenty of light into the new spaces and strengthen the connection with the garden.
Outside, polished concrete continued through to the garden, alongside cast concrete steps and a bespoke BBQ with a cast concrete worktop.
The landscaping was a major part of the project. We built a feature retaining wall using Wienerberger bricks, incorporating a living green wall and a 100mm solid oak cantilevered bench. A second feature wall was added at the bottom of the garden, creating a separate seating and relaxation area.
The finished property now has a much stronger connection between the house and garden, with the new extension and basement providing additional space for the client.
The combination of polished concrete, timber, brick, aluminium and planting makes the project distinctive while working naturally with the original Victorian property.
The garden has become an extension of the home, with dedicated spaces for outdoor cooking, dining and relaxing, making the most of the property from front to back.
