Set within a traditional four-bedroom property in Clapham, this is a project where original character meets a much more contemporary way of living.

The property has a strong sense of history and detail, but the interiors have been given a fresh, modern feel. Natural materials, exposed brickwork and bespoke joinery sit alongside generous glazing and open, light-filled spaces.

At the rear, the house opens out towards the garden, creating a strong connection between the inside and outside. The result is a home that feels bright, spacious and contemporary, while still retaining the character that makes the original property special.

The Brief

The client proposed to give the house more space and a more modern layout without losing its original character.

They wanted the new space to feel like a natural part of the existing property, with better connections between the kitchen, dining areas and garden. It was also important to retain and celebrate some of the building’s original features rather than replace them.

The Work

We carried out a full remodelling of the property, including the basement extension and new kitchen, together with the dramatic double-height void.

The existing exposed brickwork was retained and used as a feature, bringing texture and warmth into the new spaces. Bespoke panelling and carefully detailed finishes were introduced alongside it to create a balance between the original building and the contemporary design.

The windows were made specifically for the project to match those elsewhere in the house, helping the new extension sit naturally with the original property.

Outside, the dining space extends onto a new terrace, with built-in worktops creating a practical area for outdoor dining.

The Result

The finished home feels open, light and contemporary while still having a clear connection to its original character.

The combination of exposed brick, bespoke detailing, generous glazing and the new connection to the garden gives the property a distinctive feel. The extension doesn’t overpower the original house; instead, the old and new elements work together to create a home that feels considered and natural.

Hannington Road was shortlisted for both the Architect Journal’s Retrofit Awards and the British Home Awards for Home Transformation of the Year, recognising the quality and thought behind the transformation.
